Frequently Asked Questions
What is One Church Metro Denver?
1CMD is a coalition of churches from around Colorado and especially from the Metro Denver area who are committed to Jesus Christ and to the witness that we bear to His Name in the public square. It is a coalition that has been created to meet specific needs that have arisen from having the Democratic National Convention in our city. We believe that this is a great opportunity for Denver and for the Church to shine the light of Christ around the world, through prayer, blessing and service.
Is One Church Metro Denver made of all evangelical churches?
There is a large contingent of evangelical churches from all denominations represented in 1CMD. These churches come together on the basis of faith in Christ and relationship with each other, not on the basis of ideology or political leanings. Yes, we are mostly "evangelical" churches, but here we are One Church - Metro Denver. We are not a group that is easily pigeon-holed with labels, but a group of churches that crosses denominational lines, ethnic lines, generational lines and ... by the way ... picket lines. We are here to serve and bless and pray.
Will you be evangelizing?
It was St. Francis of Assisi who said, "Preach the Gospel every day, and when necessary use words!" If evangelizing is preaching on street corners with sandwich boards or making a nuisance of ourselves to passersby at the park, the answer is "no." Our commission from God, we believe, for this time is to be His hands, feet, eyes, ears ... and if asked, His mouth ... to those we are called to bless, to pray for and to serve around the Convention in August. We are called to do the same every day, 24/7/365, no matter where we are or what we are doing. That is the point of the theme verse, Micah 6:8, "He has shown you, O man, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you; but to do justly, and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." If justice, mercy and humility are evangelizing, then the answer is a resounding YES!
Are you here to lobby as political activists, like some other Christian groups?
Each group has its own identity, even within 1CMD, but we are asking that those who come to work within this group focus on the purpose and the message we have been charged with. We are not here to hold up individual causes, though we believe in them passionately. We are not here to sway political opinion, though we have our own opinions, certainly. We are not here to protest, but to demonstrate a loving presence in servant work and blessing prayers we offer. We are focused on the purpose and message indicated in our theme which is simple: Do Justly - Love Mercy - Walk Humbly.
Is 1CMD conservative or liberal?
Most are "conservative" in theology and many politically as well, but we believe that Jesus cannot be fully characterized in either way. The labels are a thing of our making, not God's. Jesus Christ was into the three things we want to stand for here: Justice, Mercy and Humility. No one did these things better than He. And since we aren't here to argue politics or theology with each other, all are welcome in the work to which God has called us: to Pray, to Bless and to Serve every person we meet: Denver-ites, Delegates, Pundits and Protesters alike. All are intended to simply see the love of God and the servant call of God's people.
But, don't you care about the DNC's 'agenda'?
Actually we care deeply, and thus our call to pray. There is no more powerful force on the earth than focused prayer. We just don't believe that the way of agendas and power is necessarily God's way. Jesus himself said that He was among us as "one who serves." It is our calling at this time, to follow his example of humble servanthood, blessing and love as we pray, walk and pick up trash and hand out water, help people with directions in our city, and all the things that will make Denver a light to the nations.
How can I get to the Creek Front Park? Where should I park?
As 1 Church Metro Denver we understand from our conversations with the city and the DNC parking and travel will be difficult. Routes are being changed, closed and open daily. You can visit the cities website www.DenverGov.org for more information. We encourage you to take in Light Rail and RTD. If you're providing resources and materials for the event please email info@1ChurchMetroDenver.org to organize your drop off.
